Every day you do the normal steps in your skin care routine like washing your face with your favorite face wash, applying your favorite moisturizer then maybe a little facial spray and some eye cream to top it off. Even with all of that you still feel like something is missing and you could better your skin somehow. You feel like there is this layer of rough skin just sitting on top of your face and body and you don’t know why because you think you are doing everything the correct way to achieve that healthy skin. Well, you know that face scrub that we all have but usually just throw it under the sink or on the bathroom shelf with all the other beauty products that we don’t ever use? Yup, that product will do wonders for your skin, wow WHO KNEW!!!!
Making a face scrub part of your skincare routine can and will give you some real serious improvements on making your skin look and feel flawless. Exfoliating should be added to your routine no matter what skin type you have whether it is dry, oily or combination. In this post I am going to share with you all the steps to take and the RIGHT way to exfoliate your skin from head to toe and why it is so important to add to your routine.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dry and dead skin cells on the skins outermost surface. Exfoliation contributes to the treatment of a variety of skin issues as well as increases blood circulation and improves a healthy and radiant glow for your skin. With so many benefits there is no reason not to be exfoliating.
According to SkinandBodyRefinery.com exfoliating 2 times per a week is the recommendation to encourage new healthy skin tissue to grow. Exfoliating anymore after that would be stripping the natural oils from your skin which you do not want to do.
Key benefits to exfoliation
1- Fades age spots and dark spots by evening out the skin tone. Changing hormones, Pregnancy and just by getting older Also, after a pimple/ blemish has gone away it will leave an ugly mark and by exfoliating the recommended time you can ensure that the mark will disappear over time.
2- Minimizes pore size and reduces clogged pores. By exfoliating it draws out all the dirt and bacteria leaving your pores around your nose, chin and forehead nice and clean.
3- This one goes with number 2 as well and it is preventing acne. Just like how it helps your pores as said above, once the congestion is taken out of your pores it helps with getting rid of acne. Clogged pores are the culprit to acne, blackheads and whiteheads. GET RID OF CLOGGED PORES GET RID OF ACNE
4- Allows your moisturizer, antioxidants and collagen-boosting serums to get in your pores. If your pores are blocked, then all the good stuff can’t reach the deeper levels of your skin and do the job it is supposed to.
5-Dry Skin- if you notice your skin is dry or dehydrated (which are two completely different things which will be for another post if you are interested) and your finding little flakes of skin peeling off your face as if you got a sunburn and your peeling then you would definitely benefit BIG TIME from exfoliating.
Exfoliate 2 times a week and apply a nice light weight moisturizer
6-Ingrown Hairs- if you wax your bikini area, legs, pits or arms you should know that your hair grows back weaker every time because of the hair being pulled straight from the roots. When the hair is trying to grow back in sometimes it cannot find its way back through the skin and that area will then become red causing an ingrown hair. By exfoliating you are removing the top layer of dead skin cells off and allowing the hair to grow back in correctly.
7- Health and wellbeing- Exfoliating your whole body from head to toe and removing all the dead skin cells makes you feel silky smooth, but not only does it make your skin feel baby so soft, but exfoliation also increases the blood circulation and lymphatic system. This encourages new skin cells to grow, breaks down fatty tissue and breaks down and drains toxins from the skin. Make sure after exfoliating you always use a good moisturizer and lotion on your face and body especially one that has spf in it.
8- Tanning in a booth or a salon- Yes tanning is bad for your skin and we all know this, but we all go to achieve that beautiful sun kissed glow myself included. Tanning leaves behind a BIG layer of dead skin cells so by exfoliating we can remove them and wipe away most of the sun damaging skin cells leaving us with healthy looking skin.
Proper steps to exfoliate your face
1. Cleanse your face thoroughly with your favorite facewash
2. Take a quarter sized amount of your favorite face scrub and rub it in circular motion with your fingers
3. Rinse with warm water that pat (NOT RUB) mostly dry
4. While your face is a little damp, apply your favorite moisturizer (preferably one that has SPF in it)
As your exfoliating your face you can go over your lips as well to exfoliate them. It is better to exfoliate your lips when dry not wet. Then rinse off. Another way to exfoliate the lips and take your scrub and apply it to a tooth brush and brush your lips that way. (Homemade lip scrubs are good and easy and fun to make. I have a bunch of recipes on my Pinterest page).
Proper steps to exfoliate your body
Exfoliating your body is almost the same exact steps as exfoliating your face,
- Before you get in the shower and start this amazing process of exfoliating you want to grab a loofah sponge or exfoliating gloves and rub all over your body to start the shedding processes
2. Get in the shower and run the water down your body to get the dead skin cells off that you just rubbed off.
3. Exfoliate- take your loofah sponge/ exfoliating gloves and add your favorite body scrub to and in circular motions rub your body all over
*Make sure you are paying extra attention to your knees, elbows, hands and feet. These areas are prone to being rough and dry. *
4. Rinse with warm water using your hands to get everything all off you
5. Use an in-shower lotion like Nivea in-shower lotion radiant silk
6. Finally once you are out of the shower, pat dry your skin and put on a good moisturizer.
Exfoliation is not hard to do, and it is so beneficial to your skin. Find a way to incorporate it in your weekly routine. It is only required two times a week and you can basically do it while you are in the shower. After exfoliation you should also drink plenty of water. The recommended amount is eight cups filled with eight oz of water. One last thing is always making sure your moisturizer has plenty of SPF in it. Even if it is not sunny outside the UV rays can still damage your skin. Well that’s its guys, I hope this post has helped you in finding your exfoliation routine and achieving better, healthier looking skin.
